Fairfax Campus Notice: Parking Lot Paving and Closures

This summer, parking areas on the Fairfax Campus will be milled, paved, and striped. The following schedule is subject to change based on weather and existing conditions. Signage about closures will be posted at parking lot entrances.

Week of May 13:

Lot J will be closed May 13–15. Lot J permitholders may use any of the general permit areas.
Washington lot in Presidents Park will be closed May 13–14.
Ike’s loading dock will be closed May 13–27 for concrete repairs.
Aquatic and Fitness Center parking lot will be closed on May 14.
Art and Design Building parking lot/Nguyen Engineering Building parking lot will be closed on May 14.
Lot T will be closed on May 16.
NE Module parking lot will be closed on May 16.
Eastern Shore parking lot will be closed on May 16.
Roberts House parking lot will be closed on May 17.

Week of May 27:

Lot R will be closed from May 28 to June 3.
Merten Hall accessible parking spaces will be closed May 28–29.
Merten Hall 30-minute lot will be closed May 28–29.

Week of June 10:

Johnson Center loading dock will be closed June 12– 13.

Week of June 24:

Lot C will be closed June 24–28
Lot A (west side, closer to EagleBank Arena) will be closed June 24–27

Week of July 1:

Lot A (east side, closer to Nottoway River Lane) will be closed July 1–5

Week of July 22:

Lot K (half of lot) will be closed July 22–26

Week of July 29:

Lot K (back half of lot) will be closed July 29 to August 2.
EagleBank Arena loading dock will be closed on July 29.
Johnson Center loading dock will be closed on July 29.

Large sections of Lot I will be closed from approximately mid-June to mid-August for a drainage improvement project.

George Mason University Spring Commencement will take place on Thursday, May 9, at 10 a.m. in EagleBank Arena on the Fairfax Campus. Separate Degree Celebrations will honor school and college graduates from Thursday, May 9, through Saturday, May 11, at the Fairfax Campus and Mason Square. Expect heavy traffic on and around campus. Multiple ceremonies will occur each day at the Fairfax Campus.

Heavy traffic is expected on and around George Mason University’s Fairfax Campus for regional high school graduation ceremonies at EagleBank Arena from May 29 through June 18, 2024.

EagleBank Arena will host up to three ceremonies on many days, so traffic will be entering and exiting campus from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Please allow extra travel time on and around campus.

Contractors for Fairfax County will complete a routine survey of sewer lines on Mason’s Fairfax Campus over the next four weeks. This will require intermittent road and sidewalk closures as crews move around campus. Any closures should be brief.

Noise from Construction at Van Metre and Vernon Smith Halls

Contractors will complete concrete drilling on the basement level of the Van Metre Garage on Wednesday, April 3, 7 a.m. to noon. Building occupants may experience loud noise during this work. For questions, contact arlops@gmu.edu.

Contractors will complete work on the rear façade of Vernon Smith Hall during the weeks of April 8 and April 15. Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. There will be intermittent drilling noise and vibration throughout the building. For questions, contact Lincoln Properties at 703-351-0000.

Traffic Advisory: Lane and Sidewalk Closures on Fairfax Drive

Lane closures will be in effect on Fairfax Drive between Kenmore and Kansas streets starting Friday, April 5, at 10 p.m. Two-way traffic will be diverted to the westbound lanes, with one lane open in each direction. The bike lane will be closed, and pedestrians will need to use the sidewalk on the south side of Fairfax Drive. These closures are expected to be in effect for approximately two weeks. Helicopter landings are scheduled at the West Campus parking lot on two upcoming dates, as part of ROTC training exercises:

Thursday, March 28, between noon and 5:30 p.m.
Thursday, April 4, between 7 a.m. and noon

Sections of the West Campus parking lot will be closed during the helicopter landings.

The elevator in the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) is currently out of service for repairs. These repairs are expected to continue for at least 30 days.

While the elevator is out of service, the accessible parking spots in front of the AFC will only provide accessible entrance to the main floor. In order to access the lower level of the AFC, which includes the pool, patrons will need to park in the accessible parking spots located around the back of the building, in the Potomac Heights Parking Lot on Presidents Park Drive. From there, patrons may enter the lower level of the AFC via door B17. This door is not automated, and a staff member will need to be present to check in all patrons entering through B17. Please ask the front desk staff for assistance when locating the parking lot and entering the lower-level entrance upon arrival.

On the evenings of Wednesday, March 13, and Thursday, March 14, there will be an increased volume in traffic on and around the Fairfax Campus, as well as an increase in on-campus parking, due to events at EagleBank Arena, with 5,000 attendees expected.

The events are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. Levels 4 and 5 of the Shenandoah Parking Deck will be open to General area parking permits and event parking starting at 4 p.m. Vehicles should enter the Shenandoah Deck at the Level 3 permit entrance. The events are scheduled to end at 10:30 p.m. All General area permit parkers as well as event parkers should exit the Shenandoah Deck by 11 p.m.

Drivers should allow additional travel time to and from campus and avoid the southern end of campus near EagleBank Arena and Braddock Road. Extra time should be allowed if using Mason Shuttles.

Those wishing to avoid arena parking and traffic impacts on the Fairfax Campus should consider parking in the Rappahannock Parking Deck on the north end of campus and use University Drive and Roberts Road for access.
